Having kids might make you feel like your house has been turned upside down, and plumbing issues can be a common problem. There are plenty of ways kids might accidentally clog drains, but most of the time it's because they don't know any better. Here are four common drain clog issues that kids might cause, and how to avoid them.
1. Down the Toilet Mysteries
Brace yourself, it WILL happen. At one point or another your child will not be able to resist flushing something down the toilet. Whether this is their toothbrush, a toy, or your cellphone, it's important to try to glean as much information out of your child as possible. This will help with any fishing you might try on your own or information you can let the plumber know. Be sure that your child is aware of what fixes were needed so that they understand this is a big no-no in the future.
2. Too Much Toilet Paper
Kiddos can be proud of their accomplishments in the bathroom and might be ready for some privacy once potty training is complete. Be sure that a part of their education is about toilet paper usage to ensure they aren't using half of the roll every time nature calls. This can lead to clogging quickly, but is easily avoidable. Be sure to have a plunger on the ready just in case.
3. Hair in the Shower
If your child has quite a bit of hair, this will shed in the shower during shampoo time. This is unavoidable, but this is a good time to invest in a drain catcher. Teach your child how to clear this after shower or bath time so this becomes routine and your bathtub can stay clog-free.
4. The Culinary Prodigy
If you have a child that is excited to learn in the kitchen, this can be a fun way to teach your child about cooking and food prep. One area that should also be covered is what can go down the kitchen sink. The age of your plumbing and the strength of your garbage disposal need to be gone over with your child before food waste ends up down the drain.
It's important to remember that for the most part, your kids don't mean any real harm on your plumbing. Things that might be common knowledge to you will be learned through trial and error by your child without your guidance. If you are up against a drain clog you cannot fix or have a reoccurring issue, have a plumber, like Backlund Plumbing, come out and assess your problem.Share

Hi everyone, my name is Bonita Ploursa. After living in my first home for several years, I decided the kitchen needed a drastic change. I spent the bulk of my time baking cakes, making candy and canning jam in my kitchen. However, cleanup was a nightmare due to the lack of a dishwasher. Furthermore, my sink area could only fit one small pot, which made it impossible to wash out my cookware. I hired a plumber to help route lines for a dishwasher and replace the sink. I also had my plumber install a nice garbage disposal in the sink. The process took very little time and no effort on my part. I would like to discuss this upgrade, and others like it, on my website. I will explore the various ways plumbers move pipes and install appliances throughout the kitchen.
