Plumbing Issues That Can Create Health Risks For Your Family

There are some minor plumbing repair problems that you can perform yourself or can wait until an opportune time for a plumber to be called to fix them. However, there are some issues that must be dealt with immediately to protect the health and safety of your family.

Natural gas leaks

A natural gas leak must be repaired as soon as it is detected. Natural gas can accumulate inside your home to a level that can cause an explosion that destroys not only your home but possibly several homes, killing or injuring everyone inside.

Your local natural gas supplier blends in a chemical with a strong smell of sulfur, such as that of rotten eggs, so that you may detect a leak. If you encounter such a smell, you must call 911 immediately and have everyone vacate your home. Your gas provider will be contacted to turn off the natural gas supply to your home.

You must then call a full-service plumbing provider, who has experience in working with gas piping, to repair the leak. The plumber must also relight any pilot lights for all of the gas appliances in your home after repairs are done and gas service can be restored.

They can also look for possible sources of future leaks, such as the hose from your gas pipe to your stove. Older stoves may have flexible metal hoses, that corrode and may crack over time if your stove is jostled or moved. The metallic hose can be replaced with a flexible synthetic hose while your gas service is turned off.

Older homes may not be equipped with a shutoff valve at the location of the stove supply pipe. The addition of a shutoff valve would help immensely if the supply hose to the stove would break or be compromised in some other fashion in the future.

Hot water heater repair

If your hot water heater uses natural gas as its fuel source, you face double jeopardy. A breach of the natural gas line would be one issue, but the byproduct of natural gas burning by your water heater is actually a more serious threat to your family.

If you look atop your gas water heater, you will see a round cap and an exhaust pipe that leads outside your home. This pipe carries deadly carbon monoxide gas from your water heater and is positioned in a specific manner to accomplish this task.

If work is done on the pipes atop the water heater or the exhaust system is moved or detached in any other way, your entire family may be killed. Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless. Poisoning causes victims to fall into a sleep from which they never awaken.

Backed up sewers

While a sewer backup may seem to be more of an unpleasant incident that a health risk, it poses serious threats, both immediate and long term, to your family.

When raw sewage comes up through your drains, it not only smells and looks noxious, but is also accompanied by sewer gases such as methane. These gases can both explosive and harmful to the body in sufficient concentrations.

This sewage may also contain dangerous bacteria such as e-coli, which can sicken healthy adults and kill those with weaker immune systems, such as children or the elderly.

While a drain cleaning service can relieve the immediate blockage, you may need a plumber who can replace your sewer line if it is broken beyond repair. A full-service plumber who has experience in sewer pipe replacement can offer less intrusive options than digging up your yard to replace your sewer line, such as a trenchless replacement, which requires very little digging.

Don't gamble with your family's health. Use a full-service plumber (such as one from Budget Rooter Plumbing & Drain Cleaning) who can deal with anything they may encounter when repairing plumbing problems in your home.

Learning About Plumbing Services For The Kitchen

Hi everyone, my name is Bonita Ploursa. After living in my first home for several years, I decided the kitchen needed a drastic change. I spent the bulk of my time baking cakes, making candy and canning jam in my kitchen. However, cleanup was a nightmare due to the lack of a dishwasher. Furthermore, my sink area could only fit one small pot, which made it impossible to wash out my cookware. I hired a plumber to help route lines for a dishwasher and replace the sink. I also had my plumber install a nice garbage disposal in the sink. The process took very little time and no effort on my part. I would like to discuss this upgrade, and others like it, on my website. I will explore the various ways plumbers move pipes and install appliances throughout the kitchen.
